The Thousand island lake
In 1959, China built the first self-designed and self-made large-scale hydroelectric power station, Xin'anjiang Hydropower Station, and the artificial lake formed by the dam impoundment flooded the ancient city of Chun'an underwater. The large and small hillsides were surrounded by water, thus forming many small islands. The Lake area of Thousand island Lake is 567.40 square kilometers, with a maximum depth of 108 meters, an average depth of 34 meters and a volume of 17.84 billion cubic meters. The main source water of Thousand island Lake is Xin'an River and its tributaries in Anhui Province, and the catchment water comes from Shexian, Xiuning, Tunxi, Jixi in Huizhou, Anhui Province, and the South of Qimen and Huangshan Mountains. Thousand islands lake surface is open, 10000 hectares, islands are scattered; big islands are like mountains, small islands are like boats, each is crisp, like a piece of Jasper half immersed in the lake. Because there are few plankton in the water, the lake water is as clear as a mirror. Because of the depth of the water, it looks like green as blue as jadeite. Major islands include Meifeng Island, Monkey Island, Longshan Island and Lock Island. Today, Thousand island lake has developed into a tourist attraction, which attracts countless tourists from home and abroad every year. It has become another famous scenic spot in Zhejiang Province besides Hangzhou's West Lake.
