A Hedge Between Keeps Friendship Green - Jun Zi Zhi Jiao Dan Ru Shui

Water

Because of the magnanimous mind among gentlemen, there is no need to be on guard, pay no attention to too many polite words, and do not be too humble. The communication between gentlemen can be relaxed and natural, and the mind is as clear and transparent as water. This is the philosophy of " a hedge between keeps friendship green". This idiom comes from Chuang Tzu, the representative of Chinese Taoist school.

Allusion

During the reign of Zhenguan in Tang Dynasty, Xue Rengui lived in a cave with his wife before he achieved anything. Because he was devoted to martial arts and reading, he had no source of income and lived a very poor life. Fortunately, Wang Maosheng, a good friend of mine, knew that his family was in difficulty and often came to see him with money and food. It was through Wang Maosheng's help that Xue family survived this period of poverty. Later, Xue Rengui joined the army and became a general step by step because of his excellent martial arts and brave fighting. During the eastern expedition with Li Shimin, Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty, Xue Rengui repeatedly made war achievements and was named "King of Rehabilitating Liao". When Xue Rengui became the general, there were a large number of Ministers of culture and military who came to the palace to give gifts and congratulations, but Xue Rengui declined them politely. However, there were exceptions. One day, he accepted two jars of wine. Because these two jars of wine were sent by Wang Maosheng, a former friend. Wang Maosheng is still a common people at this time. He didn't come to fawn on him or ask him to do something. He just heard that his good friend became the general and sent him congratulations.

Xue Rengui was glad to see his good friend. He had many guests at home that day, so he ordered his men to open the wine jar in public and taste the good wine together. But his retinue open the wine jar, smell it, his face immediately changed, said: This is not wine! Sure enough, it's not wine but water in the jar! Everyone was in a uproar. The retinue angrily asked for instructions: "general, this man is clearly teasing you, and must be severely punished." but Xue was not angry. He ordered him to go down and get the big bowl, pour the clear water on the altar, then lift up the bowl, and drink three bowls of clear water in public. All present did not understand why. Xue Rengui finished drinking water and said with emotion, "when I was poor, I relied on brother Wang to help me. Without him, I would not have Xue Rengui, and I would not have achieved what I have achieved today. Now, I don't drink wine or receive gifts, but I just want to receive the clear water from the brother wang. This is because I know that the king's brother is poor. Sending clear water is also a kind of beauty of the brother wang. That is to say, the friendship of the gentlemen is as light as water. "

In today's society, the relationship between friends in the morning looks like paint and glue, inseparable, like wearing a pair of pants. But after a few hours, when the interest relationship is between the two, people's selfishness will be revealed immediately. And this story tells people that friendship should be as clear, transparent and pure as water, and that what they communicate with each other is true feelings and charm of personality, rather than interests with secular nature. In that way, friendship will be defiled.
