The Winter Solstice

The winter solstice is one of the 24 solar terms and the last solar term in the Gregorian calendar. The date of the winter solstice is about December 22 or 23 every year. On the day of the winter solstice, the northern hemisphere of the earth has the shortest day time and the longest night time, the smallest angle between the sun and the ground, and the least heat absorbed by the earth.

As early as 2500 years ago in the spring and Autumn period, China has measured the time of the winter solstice with the observation of the sun by the TuGui. The winter solstice is also the earliest solar term recorded in the 24 solar terms. In the period of Yin Zhou Dynasty, the day before the winter solstice was regarded as the last day of the year, and the winter solstice was also regarded as the beginning of the year, so the winter solstice was also known as "Ya Sui",  the scene of folk celebration of the winter solstice was no less than the Spring Festival in China this year. According to the records of the later Han Dynasty, in the Han Dynasty, on the day of the winter solstice, the Emperor didn't go to the court, the officials also rested, and all walks of life also closed for a day. Everyone celebrated the winter solstice, and the family enjoyed delicious food and visited each other to relax themselves physically and mentally. In the Tang, song, Ming and Qing Dynasties, the emperor had go to the countryside on the day of the winter solstice to hold the ceremony of offering sacrifices to the heaven in order to hope that the country would be peaceful in the next year.

On the day of the winter solstice, there is a habit of eating dumplings in China. There is a story that dumplings are eaten on the day of the winter solstice, and people are not afraid of cold in the whole winter. In some parts of southern China, there is a tradition of eating glutinous rice on the day of winter solstice; in Shandong, there is a custom of eating mutton soup.
