The Yangtze River

Yangtze River

The Yangtze River is the largest river in China, with a total length of 6397 kilometers (taking Tuotuo River as the source) and a total drainage area of more than 1.8 million square kilometers. It originates from the southwest side of GeLaDaDong peak of Tanggula Mountain in the "roof of the world" - the Qinghai Tibet Plateau, and is the mother river of the Chinese nation.

The Tuotuohe River, the upper source of the Yangtze River, comes from the GeLaDanDong snow mountain in Tanggula mountains, the southwest border of Qinghai Province. It is called Tongtian River after meeting with Dangqu, the southern source of the Yangtze River. It flows south to the Batang river mouth of Yushu county and is called Jinsha River between Yibin City, Sichuan Province. The Yangtze River flows through Tibet, Sichuan, Chongqing, Yunnan, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangxi, Anhui, Jiangsu and other provinces and cities, and flows into the East China Sea in Shanghai. Tributaries are Yalong River, Minjiang River, Tuojiang River, Jialing River, Wujiang River, Xiangjiang River, Hanjiang River, Ganjiang River, Qingyi River and Huangpu River. Zhenjiang City, Jiangsu Province, intersects the Beijing Hangzhou Grand Canal, of which the HanJiang River is the largest tributary of the Yangtze River.

The source of the Yangtze River

Yangtze River

The Tibetan language of "Geladandong" at the source of the Yangtze River, which means the GeLaXiangMo mountain, is the largest snow mountain in Tanggula mountains near the southeast northwest of Qinghai Tibet border. The direction of the snow mountain is north-south, about 60 kilometers long and 20 kilometers wide from east to west. Generally, there are 40 peaks with an altitude of more than 5500 meters and 6000 meters, of which the highest peak is geladan winter snow peak with an altitude of 6621 meters, which is also the main peak of Tanggula mountains. The mountain peaks are towering into the clouds. The snow line is 5520-5880 meters above sea level. The mountains are covered with snow all the year round. There are about 130 modern glaciers, with a total area of 790.38 square kilometers. Among them, 79 glaciers in the north part flow into the river source system of the Yangtze River, with a total area of 387.32 square kilometers and a minimum height of 5200 meters at the end of the glaciers. The total area of glaciers accounts for 20.4% of the total area of modern glaciers (1895 square kilometers) in the river system, and the melting water of glaciers becomes the source of the first river of the Yangtze River. Among the modern glaciers in the Yangtze River system, five of the seven glaciers with an area of more than 30 square kilometers are located in the Geladandong snow mountain.

Nurture the Chinese nation

Yangtze River

Water is the source of life. Living by water is the survival instinct of human beings. The origin of the Chinese nation is closely related to the Yangtze River. The continuous flow of the Yangtze River through eleven provinces and cities in China has brought not only fresh water resources, but also generous water supply and irrigation for people. At the same time, it has provided China's largest water energy resources, including water transport, water conservancy projects and hydropower. It is called "golden waterway" by China, including the world's largest hydropower station, the Three Gorges hydropower station. In the Yangtze River Basin, there are large fresh water lakes such as Poyang Lake, Dongting Lake, Taihu Lake, Hongze Lake and Chaohu Lake, which are connected with the Yangtze River. They have the function of regulating water volume and reducing flood peak. They produce fish, shrimp and crab, as well as world treasures such as Chinese sturgeon, Chinese alligator and Baiji dolphin. Aquatic products occupy an important position in China. At the same time, the Yangtze River Basin is also an important production base of grain, cotton and oil. It is rich in rice, wheat, cotton, rape, silkworm, ramie, jute, etc. The main stream of the Yangtze River has a long history, many tributaries and abundant water. It is not frozen all year round. The navigation mileage of the main stream and tributaries is 70000 kilometers. There are about 30000 kilometers of channels that can be used by motor boats. The main stream 3000 kilometers below Yichang can be used by ships, and 10000 tons of sea boats can reach Nanjing directly. At the same time, the main stream is connected with the ocean, which not only facilitates the connection between the river basin and the coastal areas, but also facilitates the economic and trade exchanges with foreign countries, so it is known as the golden waterway.
